KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Lady Volunteers (4-4-1, 2-0 SEC) scored one goal on 16 shots, while their defense limited Ole Miss (7-3-0, 1-1 SEC) to one shot in a 1-0 Rebel loss on Sunday at the UT Soccer Complex.
Ole Miss is now 1-1 halfway through a four-game road swing to begin its SEC campaign. The Rebels defeated Georgia in Athens, 1-0, on Friday night.
"Tennessee is a great team," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We came out flat and didn't play with much intensity, and Tennessee deserved to win."
For the second straight game, the Rebels and their opponent were scoreless deep into the second half, but this time it was Tennessee who scored, with Ali Christoph getting the goal from inside the box in the game's 58th minute.
The Rebels would not get their only shot of the game until the 85:05 mark, when sophomore Amy Gill fired from the top of the box. The shot was saved by Tennessee's Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart to seal the Lady Vol victory.
Sunday was just the second time the Rebels have been shut out this season. They also lost a 1-0 decision to Florida State on Sept. 11.
"Road games on Sundays in the SEC are always tough," Holeman added. "But we cannot use that as an excuse. Tennessee just outplayed us. We have a lot of games ahead of us, though, so we just need to move on."
The Rebels' next two matches are on the road against LSU next Friday and Arkansas next Sunday. After next weekend, Ole Miss will return to Oxford for a four-game home stand against SEC opponents, beginning with a Friday night matchup against Alabama on Oct. 7.
