ORLANDO, Fla. - The Ole Miss soccer team shut out No. 27 nationally-ranked (Soccer Buzz) Central Florida, 2-0, here Saturday night to remain unbeaten at 3-0 on the season. The Rebels will continue their stay in Orlando, with a 10 a.m., CST match against Kent State on Monday.
Freshman midfielder Jennifer Hance (Sugarland, Texas) scored the Rebels' first goal with less than six minutes remaining in the first period on a direct kick from 30 yards out. It was a low driven ball to the lower left corner of the goal.
Both teams are very similar in that they like to maintain possession and control the game. The Rebels were able to do that the rest of the first period and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Nearly 10 minutes into the second period, sophomore Amy Gill (Loveland, Ohio) added the second goal, a sliding shot from 15 yards out that went over UCF goalkeeper Jennifer Mannis' head and hit the back of the goalpost.
That would be all the Rebels needed, as sophomore goalkeepers Megan Vickery and Ann Shelton combined to record the team's second straight shutout. Vickery stood in goal the first period, while Shelton held the Golden Knights scoreless in the second period for her first victory. This marked the second game in which the two split goalkeeping duties.
"UCF is a very talented team," head coach Steve Holeman said. "They are going to have a great year. "This was a big challenge for us, and we are pleased to come on the road and beat a team as talented as they are. We played with a lot of energy, and we defended well."
Monday's match against Kent State will be another challenge as the Golden Flashes opened up their 2005 campaign against No. 10 Ohio State last Friday, and were edged out 2-1 by the Buckeyes. Kent State came back on Sunday to defeat Cleveland State and move their record to 1-1.
Ole Miss will return to Oxford for a Thursday, Sept. 8 match against Saint Louis, followed by a much-anticipated non-conference game against Florida State set for Sunday, Sept. 11.
