OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron announced Monday the signing of Hayward Howard to a football scholarship. Howard joins offensive lineman Corey Actis of Bakersfield, Calif.; quarterback Bruce Hall of Milton, Fla.; tight end Jason Hawkins of Fontana, Calif.; and defensive tackle Korey Raymond of LaPlace, La., as mid-year junior college signees. All five are scheduled to enroll at Ole Miss this semester and participate in spring football drills.
"Hayward is a tremendous athlete," said Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron. "He is a player we feel like is going to have a great impact on our defensive line. I am looking forward to him joining our program."
Howard, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive lineman, will join Ole Miss from Eastern Arizona Community College where he recorded 98 tackles, 27 of which were for losses. He also posted three sacks, 12 hurries and one fumble recovery during his freshman season, while helping lead the team to a 6-4 record.
Prior to attending Eastern Arizona Community College, Howard was a three-year starter for Coach Ricky Williams at George Washington Carver High School in New Orleans, La. He participated in the City All-Star Game and was invited to play in the 2005 Louisiana-Texas All-Star Game. Howard earned second-team all-state honors in 2004, while earning first-team all-district honors as a junior and senior. He shared District Defensive MVP honors in 2004 with Abramson's Alonzo Horton, who signed with Auburn.
Howard became a two-way player as a senior, starting at offensive tackle and defensive tackle. He recorded 118 tackles in 2004, with 25 for losses including 15 sacks. Three of his tackles for losses resulted in safeties.
Orgeron also announced on Monday that junior defensive lineman Dedrick Clark will be completing his degree in May and will not return to the football team in the fall. Clark played in five career games for the Rebels collecting three tackles.
"We appreciate all the hard work Dedrick put forth for this football program," said Orgeron. "It is great to see him graduating and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
