OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss got more good news for the upcoming baseball season when Baseball America released its preseason All-America teams and rankings on Thursday, placing the Rebels 23rd nationally heading into the season and naming third baseman Chris Coghlan to a pre-season third team All-America selection.
This is the third poll released this season ranking the Rebels in the top 25. Collegiate Baseball had Ole Miss coming into the season at No. 20 in the nation, while RosenblattReport.com slated the Rebels as the 25th best team heading into the 2006 season.
It also marks the second preseason All-America honor for Coghlan, who was named to Collegiate Baseball's preseason team along with fellow Rebel Mark Wright a week ago.
Ole Miss finished the 2005 season with a school record 48 wins as the Rebels claimed the Southeastern Conference Western Division title and advanced to the Southeastern Conference Tournament title game with a pair of critical wins over regular season champion and national championship runner-up Florida.
The Rebels also played host to a second consecutive NCAA Regional, claiming the Regional Championship with a 20-5 win over Oklahoma before hosting the school's first-ever NCAA Super Regional. Ole Miss faced eventual national champion Texas in the Super Regional, the third most viewed television broadcast of a collegiate baseball game in ESPN history.
Ole Miss opens the 2006 season with a three-game series against St. Louis beginning February 17, in Oxford. The three-game series is the start of a 14-game home stand to open the season for the Rebels. First-pitch against St. Louis is set for 3 p.m. of the Friday game.
