Rebels Hold Scrimmage Sunday Afternoon

10/22/2006 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Women’s Basketball team held its first scrimmage on Sunday afternoon at Tad Smith Coliseum, taking on a practice squad of male students. The scrimmage allowed Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross an opportunity to evaluate where her team stands 10 days into preseason practice.

“I thought it was good for them to get out there and play in a real game situation and see what they will be up against,” said Ross, who is entering her fourth season at the helm of the Ole Miss program. “We did a lot of substituting to let everyone have a chance to play, so we really have not had a chance to work on our team chemistry.”

Two 20-minute scrimmages were held, with the Rebels coming out victories in both. In the first session, the Rebels took a 38-27 win behind a balanced effort. Junior guard-forward Carla Bartee led the way with seven points off of 3-for-10 shooting from the field. Senior guard Armintie Price and sophomore center Shawn Goff each tossed in six points, while senior guard Ashley Awkward, freshman guard Alliesha Easley and freshman center Daphnee Frieson each added four points.

Frieson led the way on the boards in the first scrimmage with six caroms, while senior forward Jada Mincy grabbed five rebounds and Goff pulled down four. Goff also had two steals.

In the second scrimmage, the Rebels poured in the points claiming a 46-27 win. Freshman guard Bianca Thomas was the top scorer with 10 points off of 4-of-5 shooting, including making 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Easley, Price and junior forward Danetra Forrest each posted six points. Frieson again led the Rebels on the boards with four, while junior guard Tasi Worsham also grabbed four rebounds.

“There is a still a lot of work to be done,” said Ross. “But luckily the season does not start tomorrow so we still have time to work out the kinks.”

The Rebels will return to the practice court on Monday in preparation for the Friday, Nov. 10 season-opener versus Southeastern Louisiana. Tip-off for the game is slated for 11 a.m. in Tad Smith Coliseum as a part of the fourth annual “School Day” festivities. Ole Miss will host D3 Sports on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. in its first and only exhibition contest of the season.
