Linebacker Patrick Willis Named 2006 Bednarik Award Semifinalist

ROSLYN, Pa. -- Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced Wednesday the 2006 Semifinalists for the 70th Maxwell Award for the Collegiate Player of the Year, the 12th Chuck Bednarik Award for the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year, and the 18th George Munger Award for College Coach of the Year. The respective lists include a field of fifteen candidates for each of these awards as selected by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee.

Ole Miss linebacker Patrick Willis of Bruceton, Tenn., was named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, marking the second straight year to be so honored.

Willis, who last week was also selected as a semifinalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award and Butkus Award, currently leads the Southeastern Conference in tackles with 10.8 per game. In the latest NCAA stats, he ranks second nationally in solo tackles at 7.25 and is eighth in total tackles nationally with 10.75.

Other semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award include defensive end Gaines Adams of Clemson, linebacker H. B. Blades of Pittsburgh, defensive end Mkristo Bruce of Washington State, linebacker Dan Connor of Penn State, linebacker Buster Davis of Florida State, defensive back Daymeion Hughes of California, linebacker James Laurinatis of Ohio State, defensive end Quentin Moses of Georgia, linebacker Sam Olajubutu of Arkansas, defensive lineman Quinn Pitcock of Ohio State, linebacker Paul Posluszny of Penn State, linebacker Brandon Siler of Florida, defensive back Eric Weddle of Utah and linebacker Lamar Woodley of Michigan.

The announcement of the winners of the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be made during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN on Thursday, December 7, 2006. Three finalists for each award will be in attendance for the ESPN broadcast. The Maxwell Football Club will announce the winner of the 18th George Munger Award via a press release in December. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's Awards Dinner, to be held on Friday March 2, 2007 at the Harrah's Entertainment Complex in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Voting for all three of the collegiate awards presented by the Maxwell Football Club will begin on Wednesday, November 3 and close on Friday December 1.
