Rebels Fight Hard, Fall To Tennessee 3-1

10/29/2006 | Volleyball

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Ole Miss (14-11, 5-9 SEC) fought hard with a well-balanced attack as four Rebels broke double-digits in kills, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Tennessee (17-7, 8-6 SEC) as the Lady Vols grabbed the win 3-1 (24-30, 27-30, 30-27, 22-30).

Jaclyn Toohey put down 18 kills, one shy of a match-high, to lead the Rebels on the night. Katie Kramer added 15 kills while Kristen Carroll put down 11 kills and Emily Jones added 10 kills. Lauren Moffett and Rachel Kieckhaefer added to the attack with nine and eight kills, respectively.

Tara Langley came up with a match-high 22 digs on the night to lead the Rebel defensive effort as Mahan (13) Kieckhaefer (12) and Carroll (11) also reached double digits in digs.

“It was a gritty performance today from Jaclyn Toohey on offense and Tara Langley had a good match for us defensively,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “We competed well. If we continue to compete at this level, we’ll be fine.”

Tennessee controlled the first game, taking a 30-24 win to open the game, but the Rebels fought back in game two. Ole Miss hung with the Lady Vols, fighting with the home team score for score, but Tennessee edged the Rebels 30-27 to take a two game lead into the break.

The third game went the way of the Rebels as Ole Miss matched the Lady Vols point for point most of the game before taking a 20-18 lead on a service ace from Moffett. Ole Miss never looked back down the stretch, fighting to claim a 30-27 win in game three.

The fourth game saw the most action of the night as the Rebels matched Tennessee early, but the Lady Vols put together a run, including a red-card on Ole Miss’ Getzin for arguing a touch call that sailed over the head of the Ole Miss block, that gave Tennessee an 18-8 lead. Ole Miss fought back but was unable to catch the Lady Vols as Tennessee took the match with a 30-22 win in game four.

Ole Miss will return home for action next weekend, hosting Georgia and South Carolina in weekend action. The Rebels will host the Bulldogs on Friday night in a 7 p.m. match at the Gillom Sports Center.
