OXFORD, Miss. - Senior outside hitter Jaclyn Toohey and sophomore outside hitter Nicole Mahan were both named to the ESPN: The Magazine All-District Academic Second Team on Friday for their achievements in the classroom, the publication announced.
Mahan, a sophomore who shifted from libero to outside hitter this season, boasts a 4.0 grade point average as an art history major at Ole Miss. Toohey, a senior outside hitter, holds a 3.28 grade point average and is majoring in social work with an emphasis in Spanish.
"We are very excited about Nicole and Jaclyn being recognized by ESPN: The Magazine for their efforts in the classroom," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "Both of these athletes are perfect examples of the role model a student-athlete should be."
Mahan is in her second season with the Rebel volleyball program and made the move to outside hitter after playing the libero position for a bulk of her freshman campaign. The Amarillo, Texas, native has continued to play solid back row defense for the Rebels in the 2006 season, coming up with 241 digs on the year, third best on the team.
Toohey, who is the current Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, has been a driving force in the Rebels offense this season with 354 kills on the year. The Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, native broke the 1,000 mark for kills in her career earlier in the season and has turned in double-digit kill performances in 20-of-25 matches this season.
In addition to her on the court leadership, Toohey has been a solid contributor to the community with mission projects to San Antonio, New York City and Mexico. She has also organized canned food drives for Oxford and participated in Toys for Tots and Reading With The Rebels.
Ole Miss will return to action this weekend when the Rebels hit the road to take on the Auburn Tigers at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
