11/15/2006 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Laura van de Stroet of Waalre, Holland, has signed a national letter of intent to join the Ole Miss women’s tennis program beginning in the 2007-08 academic year head coach Mark Beyers announced Wednesday.

van de Stroet owns a career high ranking of No. 4 in Under-16s in Holland.  She finished third in the National Outdoor Championships for Under-16 and fourth in the National Indoor Championships.

The second Dutch player to sign with the Lady Rebels, van de Stroet is ranked No. 43 in the Women’s Singles Rankings in Holland and No. 21 in doubles.   Her wins include Anouk Tigu (No. 73 in ITF Ranking) and Marlot Meddens (No. 90 in ITF Ranking).

“We are very excited to replace one Dutch player with another one,” Beyers said.  “Laura is fairly close to where Ilona (Somers) is now, and she is five years younger.  She brings a lot of experience.  She has an aggressive style of play which will benefit her, playing on the hardcourts over here.  Laura has a great work ethic, and we are thrilled to be adding her to our program."

The Lady Rebels will open the 2007 season Jan. 26 against Arkansas-Little Rock.
