12/11/2006 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss freshman guard Alliesha Easley was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the week of Dec. 4-11 it was announced by the league office on Monday. Easley led the Rebels to their seventh win of the season with 15 points in a 65-48 win over Penn State on Sunday, Ole Miss' only action of the week.
"It's a great thing when your players get recognized for their outstanding play," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "Alliesha has come into this program and had an immediate impact. She plays with tenacity and is aggressive at all times. We were expecting her to be a good defensive player for us when she arrived, but she has surprised even us with her offensive game. We are thrilled to have her in our program."
Easley, who has led Ole Miss in scoring twice on the season, made 6-of-14 shots from the field and also added two rebounds, two assists and two steals versus PSU. She drew three charges during the game and helped Ole Miss hold the Lady Lions to just two field goals during the first 13 minutes of the game.
Easley has now scored in double figures in five-of-nine games on the season and ranks second on the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game. Her 12.2 points per game ranks 12th in the SEC, but first among rookie players.
"I try not to get too caught up in awards," said Easley, who hails from Cordova, Tenn. "However, I am very appreciative of the honor. I have been trying to just go out and play as hard as I can when I am on the court. I have been able to feed off of my teammates and I think they have been able to do the same from me."
The honor is the first of Easley's career and marks the first time an Ole Miss has player has picked up the award since its inception last season. Easley is the second Ole Miss player to be honored by the conference office this season, as senior guard Armintie Price was last week's SEC Player of the Week. Price has taken home the honor six times in her Rebel career.
Easley and her teammates will return to the court Tuesday evening when they travel to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. (CST) at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
