Getzin Named Tachikara/AVCA South Region Coach Of The Year

12/6/2006 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin was named Tachikara/AVCA South Region Coach of the Year on Wednesday marking the first time the Rebel coach has received the honor.

As the representative from the South Region, Getzin will be on the ballot for national Coach of the Year honors along with the representatives from the seven other regions. Getzin was also named Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year as he guided his team to a 19-13 record and Ole Miss’ first-ever NCAA Tournament.

Ole Miss went 10-10 in the Southeastern Conference to finish fifth overall in the standings after being picked 10th in the preseason. The 10 wins tied the school record set in 1979 and not matched until this season.

“Anytime you receive an award given by your peers, it’s quite humbling,” Getzin said. “We have a hard working staff at Ole Miss and I’d like to thank them for their contributions and the recognition by my fellow coaches of the strides this team has made here at Ole Miss.”

The Rebels achieved several milestones throughout the 2006 season on the way to the NCAA Tournament bid. Ole Miss posted the program’s first-ever win over a ranked opponent when the Rebels took down 11th-ranked LSU on the final day of the regular season in a 3-2 win. Ole Miss also posted the first ever sweep of Arkansas with wins in Fayetteville and Oxford after the Rebels had only beaten the Lady Backs once before in the history of the program.

Ole Miss also swept Georgia and Auburn, while picking up wins over Alabama, Kentucky and South Carolina. The Rebels had not defeated the Gamecocks since 1992 and had not posted a win over Alabama since 1997.

The Rebels traveled to Los Angeles last weekend, taking on the fifth-seeded and sixth-ranked Southern California Women of Troy in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as Ole Miss made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in the 30-year history of the program.

The national coach of the year will be announced on December 14 at the American Volleyball Coaches Association national meeting in Omaha, Neb. Also on the ballot are Andy Banachowski (UCLA), Mike Hebert (Minnesota), Beth Launiere (Utah), Kathy Litzau (Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Jolene Nagel (Duke), Joanne Persico-Smith (St. John’s) and Santiago Restrepo (Oklahoma).
