Rebels Add Pair Of Outside Hitters To Signing Class

12/8/2006 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss added a pair of outside hitters to the 2006-07 signing class with the addition of Emily Kvitle and Regina Thomas, head coach Joe Getzin announced on Friday.

The pair are the latest announced signees for the Rebels, joining hitter Jackie Jones as part of the early signing period.

“We are very excited to have two players like Emily Kvitle and Regina Thomas join our program,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “Both of these athletes will provide a boost to our program as we continue to build on the success of this season into the future.”

Kvitle joins the Rebels after a four-year career at Quincy High School in Quincy, Illinois that saw her help lead her team to a Sweet 16 appearance this past season in the Class 2A state tournament. The hitter posted a school record for digs in a season with 379.

The Quincy native is a three-time All-State selection, including a first team selection in 2006. She also earned All-Area status from the Quincy Whig twice, along with Player of the Year honors in 2005. Kvitle was also a three-time Western Big 6 selection, including first team honors in 2005 and 2006.

“Emily is a tremendous athlete similar in style to current middle blocker Emily Jones,” Getzin said. “Anytime you can bring in a player who has garnered the All-State honors she has in Illinois, it’s exciting. She brings an intensity and competitiveness to the court with her. We look forward to her competing for a starting spot in the fall.”

Thomas comes to the Rebels from Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas, after helping lead her Richardson High School team for three years. The hitter earned All-District second team honors as a sophomore and a senior, while being an honorable mention selection during her junior season.

In addition to lettering in volleyball, Thomas lettered in basketball and track, helping lead her basketball team to a bi-district championship as a sophomore and a district championship as a junior.

“Regina is the type of athlete you are always excited to have join your program.” Getzin said. “She is a very athletic player, and as she learns the game at a higher level, she will be an All-SEC caliber player down the road. We are very much looking to having her in the program and her helping us achieve more success in upcoming years.”

Ole Miss recently concluded one of the best seasons in program history with its first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament and a fifth-place finish in the Southeastern Conference with a 19-13 record and a 10-10 mark in conference play.
