Ole Miss Excels At Iowa State Invitational

Feb. 11, 2006

Ames, Iowa - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition on Saturday at the Iowa State Invitational. Three Rebel athletes and four Lady Rebel athletes earned NCAA Provisional qualifying marks over the two-day event.

"We had an outstanding meet this weekend," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "To have six NCAA Provisional qualifying marks just shows the depth we have and how hard our athletes have prepared and competed."

Rebels earning NCAA provisional qualifying marks included, freshman Barnabas Kirui in the 5,000-meters (14:07.56), junior Ed McCall in the long jump (24-09.75) and junior John Yarbrough in the 60-meter hurdles (7.90).

"I am very excited about all three athletes that earned provisional marks," said Walker. "Kirui's qualifying mark 5K is very exciting, because he is only a freshman and has only been in the country for about three weeks. He also set the school record in the 3K"

Senior Marquita Aldridge took home first place in the long jump with a mark of 20-08.50. Kenyata Coleman also provisionally qualified with a time of 53.87 in the 400-meters.

"Marquita continues to turn in great performances," said Walker. "Kenyata ran an outstanding race and moved closer to the school record in the 400-meters. "

Aldridge and Coleman also teamed together with Sirdonea Davis and Cachet Murray to earn a NCAA Provisional qualifying mark in the 4x400-meters with a time of 3:39.49. That mark bested the previous school record by almost three seconds.

Ole Miss travels to Gainesville, Fla. on February 24 for the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day event is hosted by the University of Florida and features some of the finest track and field athletes in the nation.
