OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team will take to the road to play in its third of four tournaments away from home to start the 2006 season, as the Rebels travel to Evansville, Ind., this weekend for a three-team tourney with Evansville and Ball State.

The two-day tournament schedule will see the Rebels face off against Ball State at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and square off against Evansville at 1 p.m. each day.

Ole Miss has struggled to a 2-8 record thus far in the early season, as the team has been plagued by errors and a lack of runs scored despite a big advantage in hitting (.248 average to opponents' .191 average).

Freshman second baseman Lisa Conchos tops the club in hitting with a .367 average, while she also leads the team in RBI (7) and runs (5) and is tied for the team lead with two doubles and 13 total bases. The Rebels have one home run, hit by sophomore third baseman Lauren Rowe against Grambling State at the Louisiana Classics tournament.

The Rebels are led in the circle by senior right-hander Dana Brill, who boasts a 0.81 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings pitched, and junior southpaw Mary Jane Callahan, who owns a 2.19 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 32 innings of work.

"Our lack of consistency and mistakes on defense have hindered our overall success so far," said head coach Missy Dickerson. "But I believe that if we play like we practice, there is no reason we should not be competitive with every team we play."

Evansville is off to a 6-1 start this year, including a 3-1 showing at the Auburn Tournament, losing 7-12 to the host and No. 17-ranked Tigers. Ball State will begin their 2006 campaign in Evansville.

"I really don't know much about Evansville or Ball State yet," Dickerson said. "I know Evansville is off to a good start, but I still think if we play ball like we can, then we can play with anybody on our schedule."

The Rebels have an all-time record of 4-7 against Evansville, but took two of three in last year's series in Oxford. Ole Miss has won both games it has played with the Cardinals, including an 8-0 run-rule victory last season in Oxford.
