OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team dropped Sunday's third game of the series to Florida, 8-1, at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Despite threatening weather all day, the rain held off to allow the league foes to finish each team's second Southeastern Conference series. The Rebels fell to 11-20 and 0-6 in the SEC, while Florida improved to 23-10 and 3-3 in league action.
For the second straight game, Florida jumped on the scoreboard early, this time scoring three runs before the Rebels ever came to bat. Three Florida hits led to their runs, including an RBI single by Lacy Howard.
The Gators added one more run in each of the third and fourth innings to give them a 5-0 lead through three-and-a-half.
Freshman shortstop Lisa Conchos broke up Florida starter Lindsay Littlejohn's early no-hit bid with a double down the right field line, her fifth double of the season. Conchos led the Rebels at the plate on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with the lone run scored on junior Brittany Warner's RBI single later in the fourth inning.
The Gators put together more hits and runs, adding a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh for the final 8-1 advantage. Florida catcher Kristen Butler, who had seven hits on the weekend, knocked a two-run double to left center in the seventh to secure the win.
For the second game in a row, Florida put together the most hits by a Rebel opponent in the 2006 campaign, this time with 14 base hits.
Ole Miss was able to collect six hits of its own, but only the Warner single drove in a run.
Senior right-hander Dana Brill (5-7) started the game and went three innings, giving up four runs, including three earned, on seven hits, with one strikeout. Junior lefty Mary Jane Callahan came in relief and gave up eerily similar numbers in four frames, with all hits and runs the same, but she managed to fan four Gator batters.
Florida's Littlejohn (7-4) went the distance and gave up one run on six Rebel hits, while striking out seven.
With the series sweep, Florida takes a 20-4 lead in the all-time series with the Rebels.
Ole Miss will bounce back and return to conference action on Tuesday to host the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks for a 5 and 7 p.m. doubleheader to begin a three-game series that concludes with a 5 p.m. contest on Tuesday. Ole Miss will then have a week off before traveling to Itta Bena, Miss., to take on Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday, March 29.
