OXFORD, Miss. - After the second two and half our practice session of the spring, Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron was very pleased with the offense's progression from its first practice on Saturday.
"I thought the offense made tremendous improvement," said Orgeron. "They made a lot less mental errors and were more in sync with what we are trying to do. We ran the ball well and several guys stood out on the offense with the plays they made."
Orgeron was especially pleased with center Corey Actis, wide receiver/kick returner Marshay Green, running backs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Mico McSwain.
"We moved Corey to the first string group and let him work those guys today," said Orgeron. "He played really well. We also moved Billy Tapp to first string quarterback today to see what he could do. He did ok."
As for the defense, Orgeron saw some bright spots on that side of the ball as well, especially in the linebacking corp.
"We continue to make improvements with our linebackers," said Orgeron. "Robert Russell, Quentin Taylor and Antonio Turner are all young guys we need to get ready to play."
Orgeron also was enthused by the play of sophomores Peria Jerry and Hayward Howard on the defensive line.
"I thought Peria had an excellent day today on the defensive line," said Orgeron. "Hayward is also starting to make himself known."
The Rebels also spent a portion of the practice working on special teams, kick-off return in particular.
"We worked hard on the kick-off return unit," said Orgeron. "We have to make a lot of improvement and we did today by paying attention to the details. We are starting to find some playmakers back there.
"Overall, I thought it was another competitive, spirited practice," said Orgeron. "We had a very good day."
Ole Miss will return to the practice fields on Wednesday. The will work in shells in their next two practice sessions after wearing only shorts and helmets today. A scrimmage is set for Saturday, the first day in full pads.
