OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team kicked off its home season with a pair of wins against visiting Southeastern Louisiana, 8-2 and 6-0, at the newly renovated Ole Miss Softball Complex on Wednesday.

The Rebels improved to 7-14 on the year after four straight road tournaments to open the 2006 campaign. The Lady Lions dropped to 4-12 overall.

"These two wins were great for our confidence," said first-year Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "We were finally able to drive in some runs by getting hits in key situations with runners on base. Hopefully we can take the good things we did in these games and continue to build momentum for this weekend's series against LSU."

Ole Miss' offense came alive in game one, as seven different Rebels recorded a hit, including two-hit performances by freshman shortstop Lisa Conchos, sophomore outfielder Jessica Plemons and sophomore outfielder Kayla Mosley.

Plemons and senior outfielder Stacy McCommon each drove in two runs in the 8-2 victory.

With Ole Miss down 2-1 in the fourth inning, the Rebels put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth before getting four more runs in the fifth to give them the six-run advantage.

The Rebels used a plethora of bunts, singles and sacrifice flies, in addition to capitalizing on three Lady Lion errors to score their runs.

Junior lefty Mary Jane Callahan (3-8) earned the win after relieving starter Cathie Hacker, who went two innings and allowed the two Lady Lion runs. Callahan pitched the game's final five frames and gave up no runs on four hits, while striking out three.

Game 2:
Game two featured a pitcher's duel between Ole Miss starter Dana Brill and Southeastern starter Jessica Sander for the game's first five-and-a-half innings.

Through the top of the fifth, Brill was tossing a one-hitter, while Sander had given up just two base hits to the Rebels.

Ole Miss broke it wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning, though, with six runs, besting the five-run inning in the season's first game against Grambling State for the Rebels' best offensive output in an inning this year.

With one out, senior third baseman Rebecca McIntire notched her first triple of the year, setting up the eventual game-winning RBI single by Conchos. After RBI singles by sophomore first baseman Erin Faircloth and McCommon and a bases-loaded wild pitch, pinch-hitter Mandy Ott hit a two-run single to give the Rebels the 6-0 lead.

Brill improved to 3-4 with the win, going seven innings for the complete-game shutout and allowing just three hits while striking out three.

"Dana pitched great out there today," Dickerson said. "She was tough and we played solid defense behind her, and we hope to continue having this kind of game."

The game marked the Rebels' third shutout victory of the year, as the team accomplished the feat in wins over Grambling State and Evansville earlier this season.

Next up for the team is the SEC opening series against LSU, with games scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. It will be the Grand Opening Party for the newly renovated stadium, hosted by Three Guys Pizza. Tickets to all home softball games this year are $5 for adults and $3 for children, while Ole Miss students get in free with an Ole Miss ID.
