ATHENS, Ga. - The Ole Miss softball team dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader at No. 10-ranked Georgia, 4-1 and 8-0, at the UGA Softball Complex.
The nationally-ranked Bulldogs used four home runs in the two games to down the Rebels, who drop to 13-24 overall and 1-10 in Southeastern Conference play. Georgia improves to 31-9 and 11-3.
"I thought we played well in the first game," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "It was probably the best we have played since playing Houston (at the Texas Invitational). In the second game, we just couldn't come through in clutch situations."
Game one saw junior left-hander Mary Jane Callahan and Georgia righty Kasi Carroll duel back and forth for the first four innings, with neither team pushing a run across, while the Rebels had one hit and Georgia had two. Ole Miss made several outstanding plays on defense to quell any Bulldog scoring opportunities.
The Bulldogs managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when two straight groundouts resulted in the two scores after the Bulldogs got runners on second and third base with no outs.
Georgia made it a 4-0 game in the sixth when Jessica Doucette and Ashley Godfrey hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the frame. It was Doucette's ninth and Godfrey's fifth home run of the year.
The Rebels made a rally in the seventh, getting runners on first and third with one out after senior third baseman Rebecca McIntire singled through the left side and sophomore second baseman Lauren Rowe reached on an error. McIntire scored on freshman catcher Michelle May's fielder's choice to made it a 4-1 score, which would be the final tally.
Callahan (6-12) went the complete six innings, giving up five hits and four runs, while striking out four to add to her Ole Miss career strikeout record.
Carroll (14-3) also pitched a complete game, giving up a pair of Ole Miss hits and allowing one run, which was unearned. She struck out six.
Rowe and McIntire recorded the two Rebel hits in the contest.
Game 2
Georgia showed its offensive prowess in game two with eight runs on 10 hits through the five innings of the run-ruled contest.
After the Rebels threatened in the top of the first with singles by McIntire and Callahan, but could not bring them in to score, Georgia managed three hits in its half of the first and was able to push across three runs, including a two-out triple by Ashley Godfrey that scored two Bulldogs.
Courtney Knight hit a two-run home run to right field in the next inning to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Knight, who came into the contest with one home run on the year, hit a solo shot for her second homer of the game.
Senior right-hander Dana Brill (6-9) could not get anything going in the contest, pitching 3 1/3 innings and unable to record a strikeout for the first time all season. Callahan finished out the final two-thirds.
Georgia starter Doucette (11-4) went the complete five innings and gave up three hits and no runs, while striking out five.
McIntire, Callahan and May recorded the Rebels' three hits in the contest.
The two squads will square off once more this weekend with a 1 p.m. EST showdown on Sunday.
