OXFORD, Miss. - Hundreds of events around the nation marked April 6, 2006, as the 19th annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day, including activities sponsored by the University of Mississippi's Office of Student-Athlete Academic Support and their Student Athlete Advisory Committee. The celebration began on Wednesday, April 5, with their National STUDENT-Athlete Day Banquet at 7 pm. The event recognized nearly 200 Rebel student-athletes for their many achievements in the classroom and in the surrounding community. Sean Tuohy, former Ole Miss basketball standout, was the guest speaker of the event. Currently, Tuohy is President of RGT Management Inc. and radio and television analyst for the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA.

The commemoration continued on Friday, April 7, when Ole Miss Student-Athletes hosted over 200 Oxford Elementary Fourth Grade students on campus. The fourth graders took campus tours with Rebel student-athletes, participated in sport demonstration activities, and listened to various speakers including Head Football Coach Ed Orgeron and current student-athletes Jason Cook (Football), Kim Mulkey (Women's Track), Jaclyn Touhey (Volleyball) and Chris Rogers (Men's Golf). The event is designed to show local youth the student-athlete experience at Ole Miss.

"Over the last fifteen years," said Richard Lapchick, Director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society. "National STUDENT-Athlete Day has grown to enormous proportions with over 315,000 student-athletes being honored nationwide last year alone."

National STUDENT-Athlete Day honors student-athletes and the network of instructors, coaches, administrators, and schools that make it possible for young people to strike a balance between academic and athletic achievement. The day, established by the National Consortium for Academics & Sports and Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, is co-sponsored by the NCAA.
