Ole Miss Continues Success At Miami Elite Invitational

4/16/2006 | Track and Field

April 16, 2006

MIAMI, Fla. - The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams turned in another outstanding performance at the Miami Elite Invitational on Saturday. Ole Miss earned ten NCAA regional qualifying marks on the day, five by the men and five by the women.

"We had another great meet today," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "We have been performing great all season, but I wanted to see how we would respond after the wind and rain last weekend. Against some great competition we really stepped up our effort. We have quite a bit of momentum heading into the final stretch of the season."

The unscored meet hosted by the University of Miami (Fla.) included teams from Florida (M), Florida Atlantic, Florida International, LSU, Portland State, South Florida, Texas A&M and Tulane (W).

After facing tough weather in Ole Miss' final home meet of the season last weekend, the Rebel men and women responded in the sun of Miami. Freshman Derek McGuire bettered his own school record and turned in another NCAA regional qualifying mark of 59-02.75 in the shot put. Freshman Barnabas Kirui set a stadium and meet record with a NCAA regional qualifying time of 8:57.15 to win the 3,000 meters steeplechase. John Yarbrough, who has been hampered by injuries recently, turned in a season best time of 14.08 to regionally qualify in the 110m hurdles. Charles Bailey set a personal record to win the long jump with a regional qualifying mark of 24-09.25. The men's 4x400m relay team also regionally qualified with a time of 3:09.01.

On the women's side freshman Lindsey Doucett earned her first NCAA regionally qualifying mark with a time of 2:08.07 in the 800 meters. Doucett finished second overall. Sophomore Kenyata Coleman turned in a season best time of 53.27 in the 400 meters to regionally qualify. Kim Mulkey turned in a season best time of 11.67 to qualify in the 100 meters. Carmia Carroll tied a season best with a mark of 5-08.75 in the high jump. Carroll finished second and earned a regional qualifying mark. The 4x100m relay team turned in a qualifying time of 44.70 to finish fourth. The time was a season best and just .11 seconds off the school record.

Ole Miss is off next weekend and will return to action on Friday, April, 28 when they travel to the Drake Relays hosted by Drake University.
