OXFORD, Miss. - Wide receiver Mike Espy and offensive lineman Bobby Harris are the latest former Ole Miss Rebels getting a shot with National Football League teams.
The Washington Redskins announced Tuesday that Espy was among seven undrafted rookies to agree to terms with them, while Harris signed a free-agent contract last week with the San Francisco 49ers and participate in their mini-camp.
The addition of Espy and Harris represents the seventh and eighth members of the 2005 Ole Miss squad to either sign or agree to terms with NFL teams. Wide receiver Taye Biddle (Carolina), defensive tackle McKinley Boykin (New Orleans), defensive tackle Michael Bozeman (Atlanta), wide receiver Mario Hill (Tennessee), defensive end Jayme Mitchell (Minnesota) and running back-wide receiver Micheal Spurlock (Arizona) had earlier either signed or agreed to terms with their respective team.
Espy, a 6-0, 195-pounder from Madison, Miss., wrapped up his Ole Miss career with a streak of 24 consecutive games with at least one reception and recorded a catch in 44-of-48 career games played. He finished top-five all-time at Ole Miss in all-purpose yards (third at 3,240), receptions (fifth with 136), punt return yards (fourth with 716) and punt returns (second with 95, one shy of the record).
Espy, who earned four Ole Miss letters, ranks seventh in Rebel career receiving yards with 1,779 and his two 100-yard receiving games is tied for sixth-most. He had a career-high 52 receptions for 543 yards during his 2005 senior season.
Harris, a 6-4, 310-pounder from Decatur, Ga., started all 11 games at left tackle last season and joined Tre' Stallings (a sixth round and186th overall pick of the Kansas City Chiefs) as the only Rebel offensive linemen to start every contest. He helped pave the way for running back Mico McSwain to establish an Ole Miss freshman rushing record with 612 yards and three 100-yard performances.
During his career at Ole Miss, Harris earned four letters as he saw action in 35 games, and drew 18 starting assignments over his final two seasons. As a sophomore in 2003, Harris appeared in all 13 games and helped Ole Miss rank first in the SEC in scoring (34.0), passing (286.0) and total offense (433.2).
