SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Fellow freshmen Derek McGuire and Cachet Murray competed in their first NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif. on Thursday.

McGuire, the school record holder in the shot put, fell just short of his record with a mark of 58-06.75 in the preliminaries of the men's shot put. McGuire's mark placed him 17th in the event and did not advance him. McGuire's school record mark is 59-02.75.

"Derek really had a solid performance," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "He knocked off the SEC Champion and some other good throwers. He really stepped up after two sub par throws and saved his best throw for last."

Murray competed in the 100 meters prelims on Thursday. Murray turned in a time of 11.72 to finish 24th in the race. She did not advance. Murray set a personal best during the outdoor season of 11.39.

"Cachet is progressing," said Walker. "It might not show in her finish, but she is learning. This was a great experience for her. You want to have athletes experience the championships as a freshman so they can learn."

Sophomore John Yarbrough will compete for his first national title tonight when he runs in the finals of the men's 110-meter hurdles. The race, set to begin at 7:15 pm, will pit brother against brother, as Yarbrough will go head-to-head against his brother Linnie, senior at Middle Tennessee. Yarbrough set a non-winded aided personal best of time of 13.70 in the semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles.

"John has met each challenge this year and this is yet another challenge," said Walker. "It should be an exciting race. All the competitors have very close times."

Sophomore Kenyata Coleman will also compete in the semifinals of the women's 400 meters today at 7:25 pm.
