Rebel Netters Named ITA Scholar-Athletes

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss men's tennis players Erling Tveit and Bram ten Berge were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its academic awards for the 2005-06 year, Thursday.
Tveit is one of only five players in NCAA Division I men's tennis to earn All-America honors and be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the 2006 season. In addition he is one of only two players from the SEC to accomplish this feat. Tveit completed the 2005-06 academic year with a 3.62 grade point average in Business.
The upcoming junior had an outstanding sophomore campaign in 2006, reaching the semifinals at the NCAA Singles Championships and leading the Rebels to their fifth consecutive SEC Western Division Championship and the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen". Tveit, the ITA Southeast Region Player to Watch, ended the year ranked No. 12 in the nation in singles and No. 7 in doubles.
In addition to earning ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, Tveit was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List in the spring.
ten Berge earned All-SEC honors in 2006 and clinched the team's berth in the NCAA round of 16. The 2006 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's tennis, ten Berge holds a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA in the Classics. He earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the second time in as many years.
In addition, ten Berge received the Way, Leavell, Jackson Prize for Excellence in the Classics for the 2006-07 year. He will receive a $500 scholarship per semester. ten Berge also participated, with his second year Greek class, in a National Greek Examination this past spring and earned a perfect score and the highest score at the University of Mississippi.
"We are very proud of Erling and Bram for the tremendous years that they had not only on the court, but in the classroom," said head coach Billy Chadwick, a 2006 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductee. "They are outstanding representatives of the University of Mississippi and are very deserving of this honor."
Tveit and ten Berge are among five of the top six from last year's squad returning for the upcoming year.
