Rebel Volleyball Working For Upcoming Season

8/12/2006 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. - While the Rebel football team works on campus in anticipation of the upcoming season, it isn't the only team sweating it out for the 2006 season.

The Ole Miss volleyball team has been hitting the court for two-a-day sessions as well in preparation for the upcoming season with the goal of a successful season fixed firmly in its sights.

Over the course of the week, the squad has reported to campus and gone through the initial acclimation period before jumping into the weight room and onto the court in practices. Every aspect of the program is coming together to take their separate focuses and combine it on the floor.

In the weight room, the Rebels are making the transition from summer individual workouts on their own time to working out as a team with a common goal under the direction of Jami Clinton, who has completed her first year as the strength and conditioning coach of the volleyball team.

"Workouts have been going very well," Clinton said. "The big thing is that the team has sacrificed their own time over the summer to get into the weight room and lift and condition. That has paid huge dividends already. The competitive spirit in the weight room has been a noticeable part of a new attitude."

"We've shifted gears now slightly, because the goals of the summer are different from the goals of the season," Clinton said. "We have been working on their vertical jump and conditioning so they can perform at a high level throughout a whole match. Now we are working on maintaining strength and conditioning for injury prevention so the team can stay healthy through the demands of an entire season."

In addition to work in the weight room, the Rebels have been hitting the volleyball court for team drills in two-a-day practices. Not only has the squad worked on implementing defensive and offensive schemes and systems for the upcoming season, but fresh faces have to learn the coaches' philosophy and teammates as a pair of freshmen have joined the program for the 2006 season.

Also playing a role in the preseason camp has been team building exercises and retreats to help the athletes bond as a unit off the court, which will translate into a more cohesive unit on the court. Trust exercises and team building programs help the athletes come to know themselves and each other.

Ole Miss will continue preseason workouts for the next two weeks before opening competition with the annual Magnolia Invitational on August 25. The Rebels will play host to the tournament which will feature several teams from across the nation, including Pittsburgh, Southeastern Missouri and UALR.
