Rebels Resume Practice After Starting Classes

8/22/2006 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss football team hit the practice fields adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Tuesday afternoon after taking Monday off for the first day of fall classes. Head coach Ed Orgeron was pleased with the way his players adjusted to handling both school and practice.

“This was our first day of practice after school started,” said Orgeron. “We have to get adjusted to how practice is going to be with classes before it. I thought they did very well.”

In particular, Orgeron thought the defense had a stellar day of practice after having two days off.

“The defense was ahead of the offense today, by far,” said Orgeron. “I thought the defense had one of its better days. Our front got better a little bit today and Patrick (Willis) had an excellent day.”

Orgeron was also happy to announce that junior college transfer Rory Johnson had joined the team and was at practice with the linebackers on Tuesday.

“Rory was with us today,” said Orgeron. “He practiced and I thought he did very well. He has some things obviously to learn on defense, but he looked pretty good out there. He is happy to be here. He looks like he had a load taken off his shoulders.”

Away from the practice fields, Willis and junior quarterback Brent Schaeffer are being distinguished this week by Mel Kiper Jr. in his ESPN.com ranking of the top five seniors and juniors by position. Kiper named Willis as the nations top senior inside linebacker, while Schaeffer was honored as No. 5 of the best junior quarterbacks.

The Rebels open the 2006 campaign September 3 at home against Memphis. The ESPN Sunday contest is set for 3:30 p.m. CT.
