Football Team Simulates Gameday in Practice
8/26/2006 | Football
Wearing full uniform, the Rebels battled against the scout team in the two-and-a-half hour workout. Ole Miss took the opportunity to go through such details as the coin toss, managing the play clock and communicating with the coaches in the press box.
“We had a mock game and went through the basic routine of gameday,” said Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron. “I thought it was very well organized by our coaches. We had a good scrimmage. We covered about everything we needed to cover. It worked out pretty well.”
Orgeron noted the play of some of the Rebels’ usual standouts in Saturday’s practice.
“BenJarvus (Green-Ellis) and Mico (McSwain) did really well,” he said. “Patrick (Willis) stood out on defense. Brent (Schaeffer) had some big-time plays. Those guys continue to play well.”
Orgeron said the mock gameday experience is good preparation for his club and allows the coaches a chance to see players working in those situations.
“When you go back as players and coaches, you see things that you could have done better before to prepare,” said Orgeron. “Some situations come up in the game and you don’t know if you covered that enough. That’s why we do it, to be put in pressure situations to test ourselves.
“Plus you get to see how people perform under pressure. That’s the biggest reason we do it, to get them used to that type of situation.”
The Rebels will take Sunday and Monday off before beginning the first gameweek of the 2006 season Tuesday. Ole Miss hosts
