Spirited Rebels Move Closer to Gameday

8/31/2006 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. As Sunday’s season opener approaches, Ole Miss continues its preparations and conducted an intense two-and-half hour practice Thursday afternoon, earning the praise of head coach Ed Orgeron.

“We had a real spirited practice,” he said. “You can tell we’re getting ready for a good football game. I was pleased with the effort out there today.

“They’re anxious. You can tell it’s time. I think they’ve prepared well. I feel good about our week’s preparation. We’re ready to go.”

Orgeron said his team’s unity has grown as the anticipation of the first gameday builds.

“I can sense our team coming together,” said the second-year head coach. “It’s not like pulling teeth to get them to practice. Today, there was a spirited group out there. They were talking amongst themselves and becoming friends. We’re becoming a team.”

Junior running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis sat out last season after transferring from Indiana. Orgeron said the preseason All-SEC honoree is among the players most looking forward to the Memphis game.

“BenJarvus has been waiting around and practicing,” Orgeron said. “You can see in his eyes this week in preparation that he’s ready. He has worked very hard.”

Sunday’s game will mark the first collegiate contest for freshman offensive lineman John Jerry, and Orgeron said that he will have his opportunity.

“He’s one of the best linemen we have physically,” said Orgeron. “He’s not totally ready to play a Division I football game, but that’s where we’re at and we’re going to play him.”

Freshman Dexter McCluster will also make his Rebel debut against the Tigers as part of the young Ole Miss receiving corps.

“He’s about as prepared as you can be for a freshman,” said Orgeron of McCluster. “He’s mature. Is he going to makes mistakes? Probably, but we’re going to live with them because he’s so talented and has worked so hard.”

In reference to 2006 signee defensive lineman Jerrell Powe, Orgeron said, “the decision will be decided by officials outside the program. Our job is to coach this football team and prepare them for the season.”

The Rebels’ 2005 campaign begins Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CT against the Memphis Tigers. The Mid-South faceoff will be televised nationally on ESPN.
