Rebels Open Fall Camp Saturday Afternoon

OXFORD, Miss. - The 2006 Ole Miss Rebel football team capped off the first day of preseason practice with a two-and-a-half hour shorts and helmets session for the incoming freshmen as well as the returnees on Saturday. The high energy practice session took place on the scorching hot practice fields adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium during the bright and sunny afternoon hours.
Head coach Ed Orgeron saw a lot that he liked on his first view of the 2006 Rebels. He was especially pleased with several of the players on the defensive side of the ball.
" I thought Jeremy Garrett had a really good day. He's battling for the starting nose guard position, I thought he had a good day out there. Patrick (Willis) looked fine. Garry Pack looked really good at the will linebacker position. Quentin (Taylor) had a good day at the sam linebacker position. Our two young safeties, Jamal Harvey and Allen Walker, showed some good stuff today. We used Cassius Vaughn in a couple of different situations today and I thought he did well."
Orgeron also had singled out some of the Rebel offensive players.
"BenJarvus (Green-Ellis) had some nice runs today. The receiver position still has a little ways to go. Marshay (Green) had some big catches and Dexter (McCluster) made some big plays. Michael Oher had a tremendous day on the offensive line."
In addition to those offensive players, Orgeron was encouraged by his first look at Ole Miss quarterback Brent Schaeffer.
"Brent stepped in the offense today with a lot of confidence. He threw the ball really well, obviously he needs some work on some things, but overall we were very pleased with him today."
The practice opened with players and coaches going through some one on one work before working on some offensive and defensive schemes. The Rebels then stretched and worked on special teams before breaking back into position groups for some additional technique work. The team concluded the opening practice session with the offense going against the defense in order to work on the game-plan for the fall.
"I thought we had a good day," said Orgeron. "The guys had a great attitude, they worked hard. You could tell they were in good condition and they put in the work this summer. Everybody got work today. Everybody on the team got some kind of team work."
The Rebels will return to the practice fields for second practice of the 2006 fall camp on Sunday afternoon.
