Rebel Football Team Practices in Shells
8/7/2006 | Football
OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron talked with the media Monday morning, and in the afternoon, he led his Rebels onto the practice field for their third workout of the preseason.
In the press conference, Orgeron said he was pleased with his team's progress after the first weekend of practice.
"Things are going well out there," he said. "I'm excited to see the new guys coming in. We have 44 new guys on our team. You can see the obvious change in just the organization of practice. Things are going along rather smoothly. This is our second year, so the guys know what to expect. They have an excellent attitude when they are out there running around in transition from drill to drill."
The afternoon saw the Rebels put on shells for the first time and practice for three hours under overcast skies. The squad opened with some skill work in position groups before joining in some situational scrimmage work. The first phase of scrimmage drills saw running backs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Mico McSwain and quarterback Brent Schaeffer all tear off long runs.
After breaking back down into position work and 7-on-7 pass drills, the team closed with situational scrimmages that provided some physical play for the Rebels.
"I thought the offense had a really good running game today," said Orgeron. "It's coming along and gelling well at the running back position. BenJarvus had a good day. Mico had a good day, and Cordera (Eason) showed some good things. Brent had another good day throwing the football."
Orgeron also noted the progress made by freshmen Allen Walker and Cassius Vaughn in the Ole Miss secondary.
"Allen is really aggressive," Orgeron said. "He had a nice pick today. He will come up and hit you. It's just a matter of learning the safety position (after playing wide receiver in high school), but he has some tools.
"Cassius is doing fine. We're playing him at some nickel positions. He has a chance to play a lot this year and help on special teams."
After starting all 11 games last season at the "sam" linebacker position, junior Garry Pack has switched to "will" linebacker, and Orgeron said the Hattiesburg native is still making the adjustment.
"He's doing ok," Orgeron said. "As we progress, we put in more details, and some of the stuff seems confusing at the new position. We're going to see if the experiment works. We always have the option of going back.
"We've got to find a 'will' linebacker. Last year, we did not have a lot of production of that position. We're just trying to see who can play there."
The Rebels return to the practice fields Tuesday.
