Women's Tennis To Host Ole Miss Fall Classic

OXFORD, Miss. Football is away, so if you’re looking for something to do around Oxford this weekend, come out to the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center and watch some of the top players in the nation compete at the fourth annual Ole Miss Fall Classic, hosted by the Lady Rebels, Friday-Sunday. 

 

Play begins Friday at 9 a.m. Saturday’s action also begins at 9 a.m., with Sunday’s finals to start at 10:30 a.m.  The tournament will include five flights of singles and two flights of doubles. 

 

The field includes SEC teams Arkansas and Georgia as well as Arkansas-Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, Murray State, North Florida, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi and Troy.

 

“We are really excited that we have the strongest field at the Fall Classic that we’ve had, with some top nationally-ranked players,” said assistant coach and tournament director Whitt Taber.   “This is a great opportunity for our fans to come out this weekend and watch some high-level tennis for free.”

 

The Lady Rebels will have four players competing in the field led by All-SEC senior Ilona Somers.   Somers, the defending champion of the Ole Miss Fall Classic went 20-10 last year, including 6-5 in the SEC to pick up all-conference honors.  She won both the singles and doubles titles at last year’s event.

 

Junior Nika Koukhartchouk reached the final of the event last year where she lost to Somers in a hard-fought match.    Carlin Cochran, one of five juniors on the squad, rounds out the list of returning players competing this weekend.

 

Making her debut, junior standout Elizabeth Wood, of Spring, Texas, will take to the courts for the first time as a Lady Rebel.  Wood was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation in junior tennis and was coached by former Rebel All-American Vikrant Chadha.

 

Georgia is sending a top contingent that includes Natalie Frazier, who is ranked No. 21 in the nation in singles.  South Alabama boasts the No. 41-ranked player, Adrianna Solarova,  Arkansas’ Ela Kaluder is ranked No. 83 in the country and Troy’s Rawia Elsisi comes in ranked No. 95.
