Ole Miss-Kentucky Postgame Quotes

9/16/2006 | Football

Ole Miss Coach Ed Orgeron

“Obviously 12 penalties and five turnovers is really hard to overcome in any game.  They really had us reeling defensively in the first half.  We went in and made some adjustments that seemed to be working for most of the second half.  I think the big plays were the fumbles when we were down 21-14 that really changed the scope of the game. We were going to go for it on fourth down, knowing we had two downs, and the fumble took that opportunity away.”

On the changes that have to be made to be successful...

“We first have to eliminate the penalties and the turnovers. Twelve penalties are uncharacteristic of our football team.  Some of those penalties really hurt us, especially on third downs. [Kentucky] made a really big third down when we had man coverage on their first score and they just beat us.  We weren’t able to sustain anything offensively in the second half.  Give credit to Kentucky and their game plan, we just got out played.”

On the fumbles...

“The first couple of series the ball was just out there. Nobody was really protecting the ball, and it was just out there.”

On the difference between the first game (no penalties) and the 12 today...

“We were a team in the first game that had no penalties, and that is highly unusual of any football team.  We have to see what we’re doing and to see if we’re trying to do too much. If we are (trying to do too much) we need to see where it is and correct the issue. There is no excuse for 12 penalties and we’re just going to have to see where we’re causing them.”

On the adjustments made at halftime...

“We made some adjustments defensively at halftime for better coverage.  Offensively we started out in a spread offense and after halftime went back to the traditional offense.”

On overcoming the poor start...

“We have to find a way to win. Good teams find a way to punch it in and we’re not doing that. We have to find a way to win. We also can’t beat ourselves. Give Kentucky its credit but, tonight we beat ourselves.”

On the character of this football team...

“I love my football team.  I’m going to stay positive because I love this group of players and coaches. I don’t want anybody else with me but, this group of guys.  We have to stick together and continue to fight. I know that if we can do that we’re going to come out on top.”

#15 Robert Lane

On the 12 penalties ...

“We basically beat ourselves tonight. We had a touchdown that would have tied it up and we had a penalty. That’s stuff that we can control. If we don’t have as many penalties as we did tonight, we could have won. We felt like we kind of shot ourselves in the foot tonight.”

On the crowd noise in Commonwealth stadium ...

“It’s tough to go into other people’s stadiums. It got pretty loud in there a few times, but those are things that we have to be able to handle. We are just going to put this one behind us and look forward to Wake Forest next week. We have our eyes on them now and we just have to go out and compete. It’s at home, so we’re just going to try to go out there and get a win.”

On where they go from here ...

“We’ve just got to keep being patient and make plays when we can get them. Our offense played pretty well tonight. We executed well, but the penalties and turnovers are something that we just can’t have happen.”

#6 BenJarvus Green-Ellis

On the six Ole Miss fumbles ...

“We usually do a good job protecting the football but we just didn’t do a good job of it tonight. We have to do a better job protecting the ball and we can’t make silly mistakes and turnovers.”

On overlooking Kentucky ...

“We never underestimate any opponent. We face each of them the same way. We just have to get ready to play football and do it again next week.”

#28 Nate Banks

On the 31-14 UK win...

“We are very disappointed right now. We worked hard all week in practice and came up here with the mindset of bringing home a win. Kentucky did what they needed to do to get the win tonight, so give them credit.”

On Kentucky’s receivers...

“Kentucky has very good receivers and they ran some nice routes tonight. I thought we had pretty good coverage on them for most of the night.”

#2 Mike Wallace

On Ole Miss’ freshmen...

“The freshmen are improving every game. They were a little nervous their first game, but they are getting better, and getting more involved in the offense.”

On the game...

“We beat ourselves tonight. We had a lot of penalties that killed our drives. We had good drives pretty much all game, but never could capitalize.”

#85 Robert Hough

On the play of Ole Miss’ tight ends...

“We had more of an opportunity to get involved tonight. The gameplan gave us more of a chance to get involved.”

On his touchdown catch...

“The safety and corner both came up, so I knew I would be open. It seemed like the ball was in the air forever. I just told myself not to drop the ball.”

Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks

“Offensively we did some very good things in the first half. In the second half, Ole Miss changed up some things, went to a three-man front. We made way too many mistakes offensively. The great news is we can coach hard on mistakes off of a very good win. Defensively we gave up some plays early in the second half, but we made some huge, huge stops and takeaways. I was really happy for Karl Booker, coming back after giving up a little bit in the first half and getting that stick on the screen pass and knocking the ball loose. Myron Pryor made an unbelievably athletic play. I don’t know many defensive lineman that can, at the line of scrimmage, jump up an intercept a patch and actually catch it. They can knock it down, but for him to catch that ball was a huge play because Ole Miss was threatening to go in and score and the defense stood strong. Lones (Seiber) was a little low on the one kick. We didn’t block very well on the field goal before the half. I thought that could have been a huge play for us before the half to get a field goal and they come up with a block on it. His timing is still not where it needs to be. The good news is he’s healthy. He did get a kick at the end and he’s got a good leg so I think he came through the game in pretty good shape. Rafael (Little) and the backs didn’t have as many holes to run though. We didn’t run it as well as I hoped, but they were doing a good job stacking it up on us. We made them pay for it quite a bit in the first half. In the second half, we got a little bit stubborn and tried to run it a little bit more. They did a good job of taking a lot of it away from us.”

On the significance of the win ...

“I think it’s a step. It’s something significant that we needed to do. We’re 2-0 at home right now. That’s another thing, we need to protect Commonwealth (Stadium). We need our fans to help us and golly, they did. They (Ole Miss) had several procedure penalties and false starts because our fans were making so much noise. That’s huge. That’s what this place has to be for us. When we come in here, we have to get that kind of noise and support from our fans. They were terrific tonight. It’s a step. We have nine games to go. We’re 2-1 and we’re 1-0 in the league. That’s the biggest thing, we’re 1-0 in the SEC. Yes, we’re going to Florida. Yes they’ve had a very good history on us in recent years. But we’re going down there knowing we’re making progress as a football team. Ole Miss is not chop liver. They have some great athletes out there. For us to hold our own and do what we did with them speaks volumes about what these guys are trying so hard to accomplish for the University of Kentucky.”

On the play of the offense ...

“Andre’ (Woodson), I thought, played a very good first half. We struggled on some things, particularly in the third quarter. We couldn’t get the running game going to complement the passing game and we struggled a little bit on offense until the middle of the fourth quarter. Then we threw one down and how about that another freshman makes a great catch off a defensive back’s shoulder pads. Andre’ put the ball right where he had to put it. Andre’ is throwing the ball very accurately. Dicky Lyons, this has to be a pretty big story in college football. The guy has six touchdown catches in three games. I know that’s a lot more than we had all last year that’s as many as Andre’ threw last year and he’s thrown six of them to one guy in the first three games. Andre is doing some very good things. I was happy to see Curtis (Pulley) get into the endzone on that screen before the half too.”

On the win...

“They wanted to do something and we talked about it all week long. Let’s do something that hasn’t been done around here in a long time. Let’s go 1-0 in the SEC. Let’s beat a team in Ole Miss that we haven’t done so well in recent history against. Let’s own Commonwealth Stadium. Let’s take a step up the SEC ladder. Whether we keep climbing the ladder, that’s what  I remind you about, we’re not done. We need to keep doing this. It’s obviously a feel-good win. They come back with two real good wins after a tough loss. That team (Louisville) looks like a pretty good team we lost to. They killed Miami tonight. I just think our players are getting better. They’re doing things better. We’re playing more of them and we’re fresher in the fourth quarter than we’ve been since I’ve been here because we can rotate some people in there.”

Kentucky Players

#12 Dicky Lyons, Jr.

On the team’s attitude after the game...

“This is the most fun we’ve had since I’ve been here. It’s great to see everyone so happy. We want to keep this up. We feel good now. We’re going into our next game confident. We want to play confident and poised.”

On Andre Woodson...

“He’s a good friend of mine, but he won’t talk to me now because he won’t goof around in practice. He only talks about football, so he’s getting serious now.”

On Kentucky’s fans...

“I feel good for the fans now. They’ve been behind us since day one. The true blue fans are what kept us in there, especially on third downs. They were really loud and it was great to hear that fan support.”

#4 Micah Johnson

On the victory...

“It’s a big deal. It’s really big for the program. It was incredible for my dad to get here to see the game and to see a victory.”

On Myron Pryor...

“Myron’s a beast. When you really learn a scheme and you know what your opponents are doing, it allows you to make big plays.”

On playing as a team...

“There are eleven guys on the field, not just one. Everyone has to pull their weight and fly to the ball. That’s what we’ve been working on.”

On what this victory means for Kentucky...

“It gives us a lot of momentum and a lot of confidence. The more confidence you play with, the more you’ll be able to get wins.”

#98 Myron Pryor, DT

On his interception...

“It felt really great to touch the ball.  I used to play tight end in high school, so it didn’t surprise me that I was able to get my hands on the ball.  To play on the defensive line and catch an interception feels great, and it’s not something that most people on defense get to do.”

On playing in tonight’s game...

“It was a really big win for us.  Last game I was hurt, and I felt down about it because I couldn’t go out there and help my teammates.  After going through some rehab, I felt confident about my condition tonight.  I felt good about helping my team win a big SEC game.”

On Kentucky’s defense...

“We did mess up on a few things and had some missed tackles, but I think tonight was an improvement from the previous games.  We had really good team discipline, and that helped us to stop the run. We also caused a few turnovers in the red zone, which gave us even more confidence.”

#15 Curtis Pulley, QB/WR

On his touchdown...

“It felt great to get a touchdown.  It was my first one of the season, and any time I have the ball I feel more comfortable.  I could see my blockers in front of me, so I was trying to make a play around them.”

On playing at wide receiver...

“I still take some reps at quarterback, but I just want to touch the ball in whatever way possible.  If my coaches want to get me in the game at wide receiver, I am all for it.  I’ll do whatever I can to help my team get a win.”

#16 Wesley Woodyard

On Myron Pryor...

“Myron played his heart out tonight.  He forced a fumble and had a big sack.  When you have a guy out there playing that hard, it makes it easier on the defense as a whole.”

On shutting out Ole Miss in the second half...

“One thing we haven’t been able to do is solidly finish a game.  We knew we had to limit their points to give our team a good chance to win.  Coach [Mike] Archer put the game on our shoulders, and that really motivated us to finish the game.”
