9/17/2006 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. -- Senior Ilona Somers and freshman Elizabeth Wood teamed up to capture the Blue Draw doubles title at the Ole Miss Fall Classic Sunday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

Against South Alabama’s Adrianna Solarova and Slyvanie Spangenberg, the two teams traded breaks early on.  At 6-4, the Lady Reb duo gained a break to go up 7-4.  Wood served it out to earn her first tournament title at Ole Miss.

For Somers, it was her second consecutive doubles title at the Ole Miss Fall Classic.

“This was a very positive weekend for us,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “Winning the A Draw’ in doubles with a new team is exciting.   It’s great for Ilona and Elizabeth to win in their first tournament together. They played a high level of tennis all weekend.  Overall, we saw some good things this weekend and some things to build on.”

In the Red Draw doubles final, Nika Koukhartchouk and Carlin Cochran dropped an 8-4 decision to Troy’s Annabelle Bares and Stephanie Vieira.

Woods, a native of Spring, Texas, also did well in singles, reaching the semifinals of the Red Draw before falling to the eventual champion.
