Rebels Hit Road To Take On No. 12 LSU, Arkansas

9/27/2006 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. It’s back to the road for the Rebels this weekend as Ole Miss (9-5, 1-3 SEC) will face possibly its biggest challenge of the season on the road at No. 12 LSU (12-1, 4-0 SEC) and at Arkansas (9-3, 2-2 SEC).

The Rebels will take on the 12th-ranked Tigers at 7 p.m. on Friday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center before heading to Arkansas to face the Lady Backs at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Ole Miss enters the match after a solid weekend against Tennessee, another top 20 team, and Kentucky. The Rebels fell to the Lady Vols in a tight contest before taking down Kentucky.

“We’re looking forward to continuing SEC play and building on our improvement and win over Kentucky,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “We’re playing two good teams so we’ll have to perform at the top of our game. Any time you are on the road in the SEC it’s a little more difficult, but I think we’ve learned to respond to those situations and hopefully we’ll continue to get better.”

The Rebels got big weekends out of seniors Kristen Carroll and Jaclyn Toohey and will look for the pair to join with Katie Kramer, the team leader in kills, to lead the Ole Miss offense. Kramer, who has posted 224 kills on the season, is third in the SEC with 4.31 kills per game. Toohey laid down a team-high 18 kills against Tennessee on Friday and followed it up with a season-high 21 kills against the Wildcats. Carroll put down a career-high 20 kills against Kentucky.

The Rebels will face one of the top teams in the SEC on Friday when Ole Miss takes on LSU. The Tigers have four players who have posted more than 130 kills on the season, paced by Marina Skender’s 178 kills. LSU also has a solid net presence with 146 team blocks on the year. Lauren DeGirolamo leads the Tigers with 67 blocks to date.

On Sunday, the Rebels will take on an Arkansas team with a similar record to that of the Rebels. The Razorbacks fell to Kentucky and Tennessee on opening weekend before rallying to beat South Carolina and Georgia this past weekend.

Arkansas is led on the attack by Denitza Koleva, who has put down 164 kills on the year as one of three Lady Backs over the 100 mark in that category. Amy Allison leads the Arkansas net defense with 68 blocks on the year, while Destiny Clark has been right there with 63 blocks.
