Rebels Fall On Road 3-0 To No. 12 LSU

9/29/2006 | Volleyball

BATON ROUGE, La. Ole Miss (9-6, 1-4 SEC) put up a fight, but the 12th-ranked team in the land proved to be too much as LSU (13-1, 5-0 SEC) took Friday’s match against the Rebels by a score of 3-0 (25-30, 23-30, 20-30).

Jaclyn Toohey led the Rebels with 13 kills on the night while Katie Kramer added 10 kills. Tara Langley came up with 15 digs to lead the Rebel defense from the libero position.

“It was a tough match on the road against a very good LSU team,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “We have to find ways to respond to good teams.”

Ole Miss took the first point on a block from Emily Jones on the way to a quick 5-0 lead. A service error gave LSU its first point of the game as the Tigers began to chip away at the lead before tying the game at seven. LSU took the lead on the next attack and pushed ahead of the Rebels 10-7 with a run.

The Rebels would cut the lead to one at 16-15, but LSU would pull back ahead of Ole Miss. The Rebels took the lead 21-20, but again the Tigers would find a way to answer. Ole Miss called timeout as the Tiger lead grew to two at 23-21.

The Rebels stayed close, but called a second timeout at game point, trailing 29-25. The Tigers closed out the game on the next play, taking the first game 30-25.

Ole Miss jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead to open the second game before LSU would get on the board. LSU would close the gap, tying the match at six on an attack error by the Rebels. The Tigers took the lead at 10-9, but the Rebels held to within one. LSU inched ahead 21-17, forcing the Rebels into a timeout to regroup.

The Rebels were pushed into another timeout as the lead grew to five at 26-21 in favor of the home standing Tigers. Ole Miss could not overtake the Tigers as LSU took the second game 30-23.

LSU opened up an early lead on the Rebels, moving ahead of Ole Miss 6-3. The lead continued to grow in favor of the home team, forcing Ole Miss into a timeout down 11-5.

The Rebels were unable to get on track and close the gap against the Tigers, calling a second timeout as the lead grew to 24-17 in favor of LSU. Ole Miss couldn’t regroup as LSU closed out the match with a 30-20 win in game three.

Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday when the Rebels take on the Arkansas Lady Backs at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The match can be viewed live on the internet or followed on live stats at www.OleMissSports.com.
