Women's Basketball Ranked 24th In Latest Associated Press Poll

1/15/2007 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s basketball team snagged its first national ranking of the 2006-07 season by entering this week’s Associated Press poll at No. 24. After winning six-straight games overall and their first four in Southeastern Conference play, the Rebels managed to crack the Top 25 on Monday afternoon.

“Clearly, we are honored to be considered among the top 25 teams in the nation,” said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. “This ranking has a lot to do with the respect people around the country have for the teams we have played and been able to pick up wins over.”

The Rebels, who were last ranked in December of 2005, posted wins over #5/6 LSU and at Kentucky last week to move into the poll. The win over the Lady Tigers marked Ole Miss’ first win over a top five ranked team since defeating No. 3 Tennessee on Feb. 4, 1996. Prior to last season’s ranking, the 1995-96 season also marked the last time Ole Miss appeared in the Associated Press poll.

Ole Miss (15-4, 4-0) will entertain South Carolina (11-7, 1-2) on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Tad Smith Coliseum. The game will be televised live on FSN South and is part of “Tickled Pink in the Tad Pad” an evening to promote breast cancer awareness.
