1/17/2007 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team, picked to defend their SEC West title, will begin competing in the SEC Indoor Championships Friday, in New Orleans, La., at the Rivercenter Racquet and Health Club.

The Rebels will have a strong contingent in the tournament, led by junior Erling Tveit, who will face Alabama’s Mat Thibaudeau in the A Division first round Friday at 11:30 a.m.  Senior Eric Claesson returns to the courts after taking off the fall and will face Georgia’s Jamie Hunt in the first round at 10:30 a.m.

Junior Robbye Poole will meet Houssam Yassine of Alabama at 9:30 a.m., Jakob Klaeson plays James Cluskey of LSU at Noon, and newcomer Matthias Wellermann squares off against Nestor Briceno of Florida at 9 a.m.

Ole Miss has three players in the B Division.   Junior Chris Rea and freshman Karl Norberg each received a first round bye, while sophomore transfer Jonas Berg opens up against Tennessee’s Johnny Thornton at 8 a.m.

The Rebels will have three doubles teams in the field, led by the No. 2 seeded team of Klaeson and Rea.  The pair, ranked No. 10 in the nation, went 7-1 in the fall including winning the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational with a win over one of the top teams in the nation.

Last year’s No. 7 nationally ranked duo of Tveit and Claesson return, while Wellermann will team up with Poole.

The SEC Indoor is regarded as the second toughest individual tournament next to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The SEC boasts two teams in the preseason top 10 national rankings and four in the top 25.
