Rebel Volleyball Back In Gym For Spring Workouts

1/30/2007 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. Eager to get back on the court after one of the most successful seasons in program history, the Ole Miss volleyball team took to the court to start spring drills on Monday in preparation for the fall season.

It is the first time players have been able to take the court with coaches since the conclusion of the 2006 season when the Rebels ended the year in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament at sixth-ranked Southern California.

Players have been able to work on their own in the Gillom Sports Center without the presence of coaches in voluntary workouts, but the squad was able to begin work with a coach present in limited drills on Monday.

“It’s great to have the athletes back again,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “The glow from the success we enjoyed last season is still evident. The level of commitment this team has shown in the off-season has been great. They have been getting in the gym on their own during open gym periods and it shows.

“When the athletes take responsibility for getting better on their own and do work away from scheduled practices because they want to, it makes coaching the athletes so much easier,” Getzin said. “They have been working hard with our strength coach, Jami Clinton, and they are excited to kick off the non-traditional portion of our season.”

The Rebels will continue workouts before beginning competition against other teams later in the spring.
