Ole Miss Falls To Mississippi State In Magnolia Cup
10/5/2007 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. -- The Ole Miss men’s golf team played well at Old Waverly Friday, shooting a 279, but Mississippi State was just a little bit better (273) in capturing the Magnolia Cup for the second straight year. State swept both cups, with the Cameron Cup going to the winning collegiate team, and the Magnolia Cup going to the alumni winner.
“We are proud of the team,” head coach Ernest Ross said. “We played well, but they (MSU) played a little better. Jesse (Speirs) played really well, and we are also excited for Hugh Muse shooting an even-par in his first ever collegiate event. Hopefully we can take the momentum of shooting a good round today and carry it over to
Junior transfer Jesse Speirs followed up his seventh place showing at the Shoal Creek Invitational by shooting a 67 to finish tied for second. He led the field with eight birdies.
Freshman Jonathan Randolph of
Senatobia native Kyle Ellis carded a one-under 71 and tied for sixth to round out the Rebel scoring. Six players competed for each team with the lowest four counting in the total.
State was led by medalist Noah Goldman, who for the second straight year, led the Bulldogs to the Cameron Cup title, firing a round of 66 for the Bulldogs.
MSU's alumni won the event for the third straight year, as the Bulldogs posted a 229, one-stroke higher than UM’s 230. It was the closest score in the Cup’s three year history, in which the Bulldogs have claimed all three Magnolia Cups.
The Rebels will continue the 54-hole tournament play Oct. 8-9 at the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club.
