OXFORD, Miss. After helping the Rebel soccer team to a 2-1 win over Auburn and 3-0 shutout victory over Alabama, Ole Miss sophomore defender Danielle Johnson was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The center back from Baton Rouge, La., helped Ole Miss vault into a tie for first place in the overall league standings as the Rebel defense held Auburn to just nine shots and Alabama to six. She played every minute in the two matches, including all 103 minutes in the double-overtime contest vs. the Tigers. She leads Ole Miss with 1,148 minutes played on the year, having played the full length in all but one match.
The 2006 All-SEC performer earns the first weekly honor of her career. It is the second SEC player of the week accolade for a Rebel this year, as senior Chrissy Strini was named Offensive Player of the Week after wins over Rice and UCF.
Ole Miss is off to its best start through four league matches in school history. The Rebels’ 3-0-1 league record is first in the SEC West and ties Georgia for tops in the SEC. Two more matches in Oxford await the Rebels this weekend, as they will host SEC East powers Florida and South Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., respectively.
