Lady Rebel Netters Conclude Weekend At Wildcat Invitational

10/8/2007 | Women's Tennis

EVANSTON, Ill. Freshman Laura Van der Stroet of the Ole Miss women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Flight B singles this past weekend at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.  Fellow freshman Yana Kireeva won the Purple Draw with a 4-0 record.

Van Der Stroet defeated Lindsay Risebrough of Minnesota in the first round 6-1, 6-4 and then downed Suzanna Mansour of South Carolina 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.  The native of Waalre, Holland, fell in three sets to the eventual winner, Joanna Craven of Purdue, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, in the semifinals.

In the Purple Draw, Freshman Yana Kireeva had a solid tournament, picking up four wins in singles.  Kireeva came back to defeat Mikayla Rogers of Minnesota 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. She then posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Purdue’s Whitney Reys, and a 6-3 6-1 victory against Arkansas’ Melissa Hoffmeister to reach the final.  In the final, Kireeva downed Milliken (Michigan State) 6-0, 6-1 for the title.

“We were pleased with our improvement by the end of the tournament,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “We challenged the girls after Saturday to be more consistent in all aspects of their game, and they responded Sunday with eight wins in nine matches. We have two goals in these fall tournaments--to win titles and improve by the end of the tournament. And we did both of those things.”

In doubles, Kireeva teamed up with Soledad Podlipnik for two wins.  First, they downed Alejandra Boeker and Anna Dzeva of Purdue 8-2, and then the pair dominated Tijana Koprivica and Alex Seaton of Minnesota.  Kireeva and Podlipnik would lose their semifinal match to Selma Salkovic and Bojana Murisic of DePaul, 8-3.

In Flight B singles, senior Preethi Subramanian lost her first round match, and then rebounded to post two wins in consolation.

The Lady Rebels will continue the fall Oct. 20-22 at the ITA South Regional Championships in Athens, Ga.
