Danielle Johnson, Amy Bayles Tabbed All-SEC

11/6/2007 | Soccer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. For their outstanding play throughout the 2007 campaign, Ole Miss soccer players Danielle Johnson and Amy Bayles have been named to the All-Southeastern Conference first team and second team, respectively, in a vote by the league coaches released Tuesday evening.

A sophomore defender from Baton Rouge, La., Johnson earns first-team honors a year after being named All-SEC second team as a freshman. She is the seventh Rebel to be recognized as All-SEC in at least two seasons.

The 2006 Freshman All-American has anchored a Rebel back line that has allowed just 19 goals in 19 contests. Perhaps the fittest player on the Rebel squad, Johnson has played in 1,818 of a possible 1,828 minutes on the pitch this year. After helping Ole Miss to a 2-1 win over Auburn and 3-0 shutout of Alabama, she was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week and earned Soccer America Team of the Week accolades.

“Danielle has worked extremely hard and been very solid in back for us throughout the entire season,” said Steve Holeman, who has now produced 14 All-SEC players with 24 total selections during his tenure as the lone Rebel soccer head coach. “She has brought it every game, and that’s what it takes to be All-SEC. She definitely deserves to be first team.”

Bayles receives All-SEC status for the first time in her career. The junior midfielder by way of Florence, Ala., has had a breakout season in becoming a leading force on the Rebel attack after recovering from an ACL injury a year ago.

Using her speed and ball control to produce Ole Miss scoring chances, Bayles has amassed a team-high 40 shot attempts and chipped in three goals and an assist. Two of her three scores have come in conference play, while she ranks 10th in the league with 29 shots in SEC games.

“This is a great accomplishment for Amy,” Holeman said. “She worked hard in the offseason, and she’s been extremely dangerous on the attack throughout conference play. It’s a great honor for her.”

Georgia head coach Patrick Baker was named SEC Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 15-2-2 overall record and an 8-1-2 league mark good for the SEC Touranment’s No. 2 seed. Arkansas senior defender Allison Harris earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, Tennessee junior forward Kylee Rossi was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year, South Carolina sophomore defender Blakely Mattern was named Defensive Player of the Year and Georgia freshman defender Kelli Corless garnered SEC Freshman of the Year accolades.

Ole Miss and No. 16 Georgia will kick off the 2007 SEC Soccer Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala., with a noon (CT) match on Wednesday. Live stats can be accessed at www.secsports.com.
