Rebels Swipe 84-43 Win From Alabama

2/11/2007 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss forced 40 Alabama turnovers and turned them into 38 points on their way to an 84-43 win on Sunday afternoon in Tad Smith Coliseum. The win improved the Rebels to 19-7 on the season and 8-3 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Crimson Tide fell to 10-16 overall and 0-11 in SEC games.

“I was very pleased with the way we responded to a tough loss on Thursday night,” said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. “That game left a real sour taste in our mouths and so effort-wise, I was very happy with this win. We still did not rebound the ball well, but we played good defense and were able to capitalize off of it on the offensive end.”

The game opened with both teams having a hard time finding the basket. The score was knotted at six points a piece when Ole Miss went on a 15-4 run to open up an 11-point lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half. A trapping Rebel defense forced numerous turnovers during the run as the Tide finished the first half with 21 of their 40 turnovers.

A three-point basket by Alabama’s Kate Mastin cut the Rebel lead down to seven points. And after a lay-up by Rebel senior guard Ashley Awkward, two free throws by the Tide’s Navonda Moore with 5:03 left in the opening frame again trimmed the Ole Miss lead to seven points. The Rebels then closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 38-26 lead into the break.

Awkward led Ole Miss into the break with 11 first half tallies. Senior guard Armintie Price had eight points, making all eight of her free throw attempts before having to sit out the final 12 minutes of the half with two fouls. Her replacement, freshman guard Bianca Thomas, picked up where she left off scoring seven points in eight first-half minutes.

Ole Miss forced 21 Alabama turnovers in the first half, but committed 11 of their own helping keep the Tide in the game.

The Rebels scored the first six points of the second half with Awkward, Price and junior forward Danetra Forrest all getting a bucket. After a three-point basket by Mastin, the Rebels reeled off nine unanswered points to push the lead out to 24 points just five minutes into the second period.

The lead only dipped below 20 points one time after that and expanded to 41 on a three-point basket by Rebel freshman guard Elizabeth Robertson for the last basket of the game. All 14 players saw action for the Rebels with 12 getting in the scoring column for the final margin of 84-43.

Price finished with a game-high 19 points. She also had five assists, five steals and four rebounds. Awkward had 17 points, six assists and three steals and Thomas had an SEC career-best outing of 17 points off of 7-of-11 shooting from the field.

“I thought Bianca did a great job filling in for Armintie,” said Ross. “She stepped in played some quality minutes. She is not only a very gifted offensive player, but she is also deceptive on the defensive end. It was good to see her play a big role in the win.”

Freshman guard Alliesha Easley had seven points and three assists, while senior forward Jada Mincy led the Rebels with seven boards and also dropped in six points.

Alabama was led by Dedrea Magee’s 11 points, while Talisha Chandler finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. The Tide owned a 55-37 advantage on the boards.

Ole Miss will hit the road for a pair of games next week. They will travel to #3/3 Tennessee on Thursday evening. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. (CST). After taking on the Lady Vols, the Rebels will travel to Starkville for the second match-up of the season with in-state rival Mississippi State. The Lady Bulldogs took a 73-71 win over the Rebels in Oxford in the first meeting.
