No. 13 Rebels Fall To No. 21 Evansville 2-1

2/17/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss.  The Rebels got the base runners on Saturday, but were unable to push them across as No. 13 Ole Miss (3-1) fell to No. 21 Evansville (3-2) by a score of 2-1.

The Rebels left 11 runners stranded despite nine hits in the loss. Brett Basham went 1-for-4 with his only hit in the form of an RBI single in the eighth to push the lone run across for Ole Miss. Fuller Smith led the Rebels at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance while Jordan Henry went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Lance Lynn (1-1) suffered the loss for the Rebels as he allowed two runs on five hits with one walk. He tied a career-high with nine strikeouts on the afternoon. Nathan Baker, a freshman southpaw, worked 3.0 scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts and no walks.

Kai Tuomi (2-0) picked up the win for the Purple Aces as he worked 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing only four hits while walking two and striking out only one Rebel batter. Matt Brinkmann picked up the save, his second, as he came in to hold the Rebels off the board in the ninth.

“Lance pitched well today. Especially at the end. He was sharp the last inning. They had a couple of infield hits, but that's part of the game. Offensively we hit a lot of hard balls. We didn't have a lot of opportunities and we didn't take advantage of the ones we had.”

Evansville put a run on the board in the first as the Purple Aces loaded the bases with two outs. Robbie Minor doubled before Kasey Wahl walked. A single up the middle from Kern Watts loaded the bases and then Jeff Zelenovich singled to short to score Minor and give Evansville the 1-0 lead. Lynn struck out the next batter to end the inning.

A sac fly from Viscomi in the second pushed the Evansville lead to 2-0 as Bacsu scored from third. Bacsu reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning before stealing second. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on the fly out from Viscomi.

The Rebels got a run back in the eighth when Jordan Henry scored on a single through the left side from Basham. Henry reached on a single before stealing second. He then scored on the hit from Basham to put the Rebels on the board.

Ole Miss was unable to get another run across as the Purple Aces snagged the 2-1 win and evened the series at a game each.

Zelenovich led the Purple Aces at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Viscomi notched the other RBI for the visiting team.

Ole Miss and Evansville will conclude the series on Sunday, February 17. First-pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
