Reese Wins Long Jump At SEC Indoor Championships

2/24/2007 | Track and Field

LEXINGTON, Ky. Ole Miss sophomore Britney Reese turned in a dominating performance at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. The Gulfport, Miss. native broke the school record with a jump of 21-09.50 to win the women’s long jump competition.

Reese’s jump, the longest in the nation heading into this weekend, easily outdistanced Georgia’s Patricia Sylvester’s mark of 20-04.50 by a distance of more than a foot. Her mark also broke the previous school record of 20-09.50 held by former All-American Marquita Aldridge and broke the Kentucky Fieldhouse record.

“We knew that Britney was a champion,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “She certainly proved that today. It was an outstanding mark. In fact, five of her six jumps would have won the competition.”

Reese was not the only Lady Rebel to score for Ole Miss in the jump. Sophomore Cachet Murray set a personal best with a jump of 20-04.25 to finish fourth. Murray tied for the third best mark, but lost the tie breaker which goes to the athlete with the second best mark. Reese’s victory gave the Ole Miss women 10 points, while Murray provided five. The 15 team points place the Rebel women fifth overall.

Reese wasn’t the only Rebel to break a school record on the day. Sophomore Barnabas Kirui broke his own school record in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:08.32 to finish fifth overall. Kirui previous best of 8:10.25 came last season. Kirui earned four team points for his fifth place finish.

Sophomore Adewale Odetunde also turned in a strong performance in the long jump. He posted a mark of 23-07.50 to finish sixth overall. Odetunde earned three team points for his finish. The Rebel men are ninth with seven points after day two.

The Ole Miss men and women had several athletes qualify during the day’s preliminaries.

All-American John Yarbrough posted the fastest time in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.77, which ties his personal best. Sophomore Rodney Lockhart advanced to tomorrow’s finals in the 400 meters with a third place finish. Lockhart’s time of 46.50 was a personal best and the second fastest time in school history. Also advancing to tomorrow’s finals were Kenyata Coleman (400meters), Lindsay Doucett (800 meters) and Cachet Murray (60 meters).

Freshman Bryce Willen turned a solid performance in his first heptathlon to finish tenth overall. Junior Rickie Bratton posted a personal best of 21.41 in the 200 meters, but failed to advance to tomorrow’s final. Senior Jacob Farmer, who had the fastest time in the SEC in the 200 meters this season, but had been injured most the year, returned to post a time of 21.44.

The SEC Indoor Championships conclude tomorrow with the remaining field events and running finals.
