Yarbrough Wins 60-Meter Hurdles At SEC Indoor Championships

2/25/2007 | Track and Field

LEXINGTON, Ky. Senior All-America John Yarbrough added another accolade to his growing list of accomplishments. The Houston, Texas native claimed his first SEC title in the 60-meter hurdles at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Yarbrough’s time of 7.67 is the fastest time in the NCAA heading into this weekend and moves his personal best time closer to three-time NCAA champion Antwon Hicks’ school record of 7.61. His victory earned the Rebel men ten team points.

“I have always said that a star has to step up their game when it counts and John certainly did that today,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “He has progressed at a great rate and I believe that he has bigger even races ahead of him.”

Yarbrough wasn’t the only Ole Miss athlete to step up big for the Rebels. Sophomore Britney Reese once again battle Georgia’s Patricia Sylvester, whom she defeat in Saturday’s long jump, this time in the high jump. Reese was not able to hold off Sylvester, as her mark of 5-11.50 was second to Sylvester’s 6-00.50. However, Reese’s mark was enough to set a new school record in the high jump. The previous mark of 5-10.50 was held by Brady Barnett.

Reese also added three team points with a sixth place finish in the triple jump. Her long jump of 21-09.50 is the longest in the NCAA this indoor season as well as the longest in the U.S. this year. It is also the seventh longest jump in NCAA history and the tenth longest jump the world this year. Reese also tied Teneeshia Jones’ record for the most points (21) ever scored by  a Lady Rebel in an SEC Indoor Championships.

“Britney was one of the top scorers at the SEC Championships,” said Walker. “This was only her fourth indoor meet ever. It was just an amazing performance. She competed like a champion.”

Ole Miss found success in the 400 meters. Junior Kenyata Coleman turned in a time of 53.72 to finish seventh overall. She earned two team points for the Lady Rebels. Sophomore Rodney Lockhart took home fifth place in a time of 46.98. Lockhart earned four team points for the Ole Miss men.

For the Rebel men Barnabas Kirui earned three team points with his sixth place finish in the 5000 meters, James Maloney earned one team points with his eighth place finish in the weight throw and Adewale Odetunde earned three team points for his sixth place finish.

The Ole Miss men also earned one team point each for their eighth place finish in the distance medley relay and 4x400-meter relay.

On the women’s side Lindsay Doucett earned one team point for her eighth place finish in the 800 meters and Cachet Murray earned two team points for her seventh place finish in the 60 meters. The 4x400-meter relay team also added four team points with a fifth place finish.

The Ole Miss men finished ninth in the team standings with 27 team points. The Rebels finished only 13 points out of seventh place. The Rebel women also finished ninth as a team with 36 team points, only six points from sixth place overall. It was the Lady Rebels most team points ever scored at an SEC Indoor Championships and their highest finished since 2001.
