Lady Rebel Netters Set To Begin SEC Play This Weekend

2/28/2007 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss women’s tennis team will begin Southeastern Conference play this weekend on the road.  First up for the Lady Rebels will be a match against No. 4 Florida Friday at 4 p.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.

This marks the second year in a row for the Lady Rebels (4-6) to open SEC play against the defending conference champions.  On Sunday, the Lady Rebels, who have dealt with several injuries all season, will head to Columbia, S.C., for a Noon match against the Gamecocks.

“It’s been tough so far with all the injuries we’ve had,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “We are beginning to get some players back.  We know we are a much better team than our record indicates. When we get our full team back, hopefully we can show that.”

Senior Ilona Somers leads the team with an 8-1 record at No. 1 singles.  Against TCU, she upset the No. 23 ranked player in the nation.

Florida is undefeated on the season at 8-0. They are led by one senior and four juniors.  Last week’s SEC Player of the Week, Megan Alexander, is ranked No. 23 in the nation.

South Carolina is off to a 5-2 start. They will host Mississippi State on Friday prior to the match with Ole Miss. The Gamecocks are led by Ana Marija Zubori, with an 18-3 record. She also teams with Gira Schofield for a No. 41 ranking.

Both matches will feature live scoring available by going to www.olemisssports.com.
