3/18/2007 | Track and Field

MEMPHIS, Tenn. The Ole Miss men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2007 outdoor season at the Rhodes Invitational on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn. The Rebel men and women combined for 15 individual victories in their first outdoor action of the season.

“I thought we had a strong meet,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “It was a great way to open the outdoor season. We had a bunch of victories and several qualifying marks. I think it was important for us to start the season on the right foot.”

John Yarbrough, a reigning All-American in the 110-meter hurdles, picked up his first victory of the season with a time of 13.88 in the 110-meter hurdles. His time qualified him for the NCAA regional championships. Yarbrough also finished sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.44.

Charles, a senior who only has outdoor eligibly remaining, turned in a strong performance in the long jump. His mark of 24-05.75 provisionally qualified him for the NCAA regional. Bailey also won the men’s triple jump with a mark of 48-01.25, which just missed the NCAA qualifying standard.

Other winners on the men’s side included Anka Autman (100 meters), Rickie Bratton (200 meters), Devin Darnall (800 meters), Barnabas Kirui (1500 meters) and the men’s 4x400-meter relay team.

Kim Mulkey, competing at the Morehouse Invitational, turned in a NCAA qualifying time of 11.71 in the 100 meters.

Marlee Kevech also earned a NCAA qualifying mark at the Rhodes Invitational with her second place mark of 144-11 in the javelin. Kevech qualified for the NCAA regional in the javelin last season.

Kenyata Coleman and Cachet Murray completed the sweep of the women’s 100 and 200 meters at the Rhodes Invitational. Murray won the 100 meters in a time of 12.18 and Coleman won the 200 meters in a time of 24.69. Murray also won the women’s long jump with a mark of 19-02.00.

Others winners on the women’s side included Carmia Carroll (high jump) Jasmine Dacus (400-meter hurdles), Sirdonea Davis (800 meters) and Francis Vital (100-meter hurdles).
