Overbeck Pushes Rebels Past Alabama 3-2 In 11 Innings

3/24/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. The Rebels came up on the winning side of a late inning rally on Saturday, using three-straight hits in the 11th as No. 13 Ole Miss (17-8, 2-3 SEC) pushed past No. 25 Alabama (17-9, 3-2 SEC) by a score of 3-2. The win evened the series at a game each heading into Sunday’s rubber-match.

Cody Overbeck came up with the game-winning single to score Justin Henry from third in the bottom of the 11th. It was the first hit of the day for the sophomore who came up to the plate with runners on second and third after a single from Henry and a double from Zack Cozart opened the inning.

Cody Satterwhite (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he worked 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and two walks. Satterwhite entered in the 10th in relief of starter Lance Lynn who worked a career-long 9.0 innings as he gave up two runs on six hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts. Lynn did not allow the walk until the ninth inning and reached double-digit strikeouts for only the second time in his career.

Tommy Hunter (2-2) took the loss for Alabama in relief as he worked 0.2 innings with one run on three hits. He did not record a walk or a strikeout. Hunter entered with one out in the 10th to relieve starter Bernard Robert, who worked 9.1 innings with two runs on eight hits, a walk and five strikeouts.

“(After last night) we challenged our guys to respond,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “You have to play your best every game in this league. In other leagues, you can play well and win two out of three, but in this league you can play well and still get swept.

“I asked Lance how he felt going into the ninth and he felt fine,” Bianco said. “He looked like he continued to get stronger as the game went on. His pitches looked strong and his curve continued to drop. I felt like he owned the inside of the plate today.”

Alabama got on the board in the first inning as Matthes singled through the right side to score Emeel Salem from second. Salem singled to open the game and stole second on a strikeout of the second batter before scoring on the two-out single from Matthes. Matthes was thrown out at second by Basham to end the inning as he tried to stretch the single and reach second on the throw home by the Rebels.

Justin Henry came up with a two-out single in the third to score Evan Button from third and tie the game at one. Button reached on a fielder’s choice before moving to second on a single from Brett Basham and advancing to third on a fielder’s choice grounder to second from Jordan Henry.

Logan Power put the Rebels in the lead in the fifth with a solo home run down the left field line that hit the foul pole and put Ole Miss up 2-1.

Alabama tied the game in the seventh when Alex Avila opened the inning with a home run to right field.

With two outs in the 10th, Alabama loaded the bases with a double, an intentional walk and a walk. A sharply hit grounder to first from Avila was snagged by a diving Peyton Farr tossed to Satterwhite at first for the final out of the inning. Pushing the game into the 11th with the score knotted at two.

The Rebels then came up with the three big hits from Henry, Cozart and Overbeck to claim the win.

Power went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI as he hit his third home run of the season. Justin Henry went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and scored the winning run for the Rebels.

Salem went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, while Avila went 1-for-5 his game-tying home run in the seventh.

Ole Miss and Alabama will conclude the series on Sunday. First-pitch for the rubber-match is set for 1:30 p.m. at O-U Stadium/Swayze Field.
