Ole Miss Women's Tennis Loses 6-1 At Kentucky

3/25/2007 | Women's Tennis

LEXINGTON, Ky. The Ole Miss women’s tennis team lost to Kentucky 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Boone Tennis Center to fall to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in SEC play.  The Wildcats improved to 15-1 and 5-0 in league play.

Kentucky swept the doubles to take a 1-0 lead.  They have only lost the doubles point twice all season.

The Lady Rebels knew it would be an uphill battle, with an injury-plagued lineup and coming in with a 10-48 record when losing the doubles since 2002.

Once in singles, Ole Miss evened the match at No. 1 as 97th-ranked Ilona Somers shut out Kim Coventry 6-0, 6-0.  With the win, Somers improved to 10-5 at No. 1 singles and 2-3 in the SEC.

After that, it was all UK. Joelle Schwenk and Carolina Escamilla clinched victories within a minute of each other on Nos. 2 and 4 to make it 3-1. Junior Nika Koukhartchouk fell to Schwenk 6-2, 6-0 on court two and then freshman Soledad Podlipnik dropped her match to Escamilla 6-3, 6-1 at four.

Carlin Cochran lost to Wildcat freshman Whitney Spencer, 6-1, 7-5 on court six as the Wildcats clinched the win.

Once the match was clinched, sophomore Kseniia Tokarieva retired just before the third set against Kentucky’s Sarah Woestmann.

The Lady Rebels were competitive on court five as well.  Preethi Subramanian, who just returned to the lineup in early March, won her first set against Jessica Giuggioli, 7-5. She lost the second set 6-4 and then the supertiebreaker.

The Lady Rebels continue on the road next weekend as they head to LSU for a 4 p.m. match on Friday.
