Ole Miss Track Excels At Alabama Relays

3/26/2007 | Track and Field

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The Ole Miss men’s and women’s track and field teams turned in 12 NCAA regional qualifying mark over weekend at the Alabama Relays hosted by the University of Alabama.

“This was really a great meet for Ole Miss,” said head coach Joe Walker. “We had a lot of athletes really step up this weekend. We had several out standing marks. To have 12 regional marks this early in the season gives us a great start for the year.”

Junior Rickie Bratton, a St. Louis, Mo. Native, finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 20.88. Bratton’s time was a NCAA regional qualifying mark and a personal best.

“Rickie (Bratton) really had a break-out performance,” said Walker. “He ran a very strong race.”

All-American John Yarbrough turned in a season best time of 13.71 in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. Yarbrough was the top collegiate finisher and his mark was an NCAA qualifying time. Yarbrough had previously qualified in the 110-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Barnabas Kirui, the reigning SEC cross country champion, won the men’s steeplechase with a time of 8:45.82. Kirui’s time was a NCAA regional qualifying mark and just shot of his personal best time of 8:45.61.

Senior Charles Bailey turned in a mark of 24-09.75 to win the men’s long jump. His jump was a NCAA regional qualifying mark and set a new personal best. Bailey also qualified in the long jump at last week’s Rhodes Invitational with a jump of 24-05.75. Bailey also qualified with a jump of 49-07.00 in the triple jump to finish second.

Adewale Odetunde won the men’s triple jump with a mark of 49-07.25. Odetunde’s mark is a NCAA regional qualifying mark.

All-American Britney Reese, who had the nation’s best mark in the indoor jump, opened her 2007 outdoor season on a strong note by winning the women’s long jump with a mark of 21-07.50. Her mark met the NCAA regional qualifying standard. Reese also finished third in the high jump with a mark of 5-08.75, which is also a NCAA regional qualifying mark.

Senior Kim Mulkey and junior Kenyata Coleman both ran strong races in the 100 and 200 meters. Coleman finished third in the 100 meter with a time of 11.86 and third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.88. Coleman’s time in the 200 meters with a NCAA qualifying mark and her time in the 100 meters fell just short of qualifying. Mulkey won the women’s 100 meters in a time of 11.84. She qualified for the 100 meters at last weekend’s Morehouse Invitational with a time of 11.71. She also finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 23.79, which is a NCAA qualifying mark.

The Rebel women relay team also posted NCAA regional qualifying marks. The women’ 4x100-meter relay team posted a time of 45.18 to finish first and record a NCAA qualifying mark. The women’s 4x400-meter relay finished fourth overall with a time of 3:40.71, which is also a regional qualifying time.

Next up, the Rebel men and women host the Ole Miss Invitational on April 7 at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
